Local transportation

Milan is well served by Lombardy’s transport network, one of most widespread and efficient in Europe, with train, bus, metro and trolleybus networks. Milan boasts 4,700 surface public transport stops, efficiently serving the 1,3 million residents of the city, with 800,000 journeys a day as standard and an additional 250,000 journeys a day during international fairs and other major events.

Milan has 4 metro lines (plus one under construction), with 113 stations, and more than 130 bus and tram routes. Compared with major European capitals, Milan has competitive public-transport rates.

UNDERGROUND

Milan is served by 4 underground lines which cross the city from one end to the other. Each line is identified by a color: MM1 (red), MM2 (green), MM3 (yellow), MM5 (purple). MM4 is currently under way.

Hours: from 5.30 am to 12.30 am

Frequency: every 2 minutes during peak hours and every 4/5 minutes the rest of the day

 

PASSANTE

The “Passante” is a new part of the Milanese infrastructure. This connects the surface train lines with the underground. It also offers a direct link between Cadorna and Domodossola.

Hours: from 6.30 am to 8 pm

Frequency: every 10 minutes.

BUS & TRAM NETWORK

Milan is equipped with an integrated surface transport network made up of around 120 lines including trams, trolleybuses and buses. A night-bus service is also available for booking on request.

Hours: from 4 am to 1.45 am

Frequency: every 3 minutes during peak hours and every 6 minutes the rest of the day.

TAXI

Milan has around 5,000 taxis. The white vehicles are distinguished by a sign on the roof which will light up when the cab is available.

Thanks to smart mobility it has never been so easy to get around in Milano: using car, scooter, bike and electric kick scooter.

BIKE SHARING

BikeMi is Milan’s Bike Sharing service, a real public bicycle transport system to be used for short trips. It is an easy, practical and ecological system that helps to improve the quality of the environment and your physical well-being. The service runs 365 days a year, from 7 am to 1 am.

BikeMi is the first example in the world of an integrated Bike sharing system between 3,650 traditional bicycles and 1,150 e-bikes (150 with child seat), unique in terms of size, complexity and innovation.
